Money will always be wasted when it comes to medicine.
H1N1, also known as the ‘Swine Flu’,Gulfstream News was supposed to rock our world. It is estimated that over $250 million dollars has been wasted according to this Digg article. Medication will always be needed and some of the drugs that are manufactured will either expire or go to waste. How much is enough and what happens if not enough is made?
How much is human life worth compared to the costs of their treatment? We might say that human life is indeed priceless and precious. So why do we grumble when we spend money to make vaccines in large amounts and then get upset when it is not needed? Perhaps, we get upset because we are driven to the point of panic by people who constantly cry wolf.
Would the money have been spent if we had treated the H1N1 like the seasonal flu? Too many questions and so few answers. Had the Swine Flu actually ‘rocked our world’ would we have complained about the amount of money spent? Probably.
